WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 1, 2024, the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC), the trusted resource for credit unions on all military and veteran matters, released the official statement regarding the “Secure And Fair Enforcement Regulation Banking Act,” or the “SAFER Banking Act”: “Cannabis banking legislation is something DCUC has been tracking due to new opportunities for credit unions to be able to offer financial services to, and accepts funds from, cannabis businesses in states where cannabis is currently legalized,” said Anthony Hernandez, DCUC president/CEO. “DCUC appreciates the renewed interest in addressing the issues surrounding cannabis by Congress, but the proposed changes do not make it legal under federal law. This is a line many credit unions rightly refuse to cross. Because of this, DCUC continues to support efforts by leaders in both houses of Congress to pass the SAFER Banking Act."
