WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO
The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) is the trusted resource for credit unions on all military and veteran matters. The Council is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors consisting of a representative from each of the services -- Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force -- plus three representatives at large.
The Council operates daily under the supervision of a President/CEO and a small staff from offices in Washington, D.C., and supports three sub-councils --- the Overseas Sub-Council, the Hawaii Sub-Council, and the Midwest Sub-Council. Whether working on strategic or operational issues or addressing regulatory or legislative matters, DCUC's close working relationship with DoD has ensured members of the United States Armed Forces and their families are provided financial services in the finest traditions of the credit union philosophy. |
OUR MISSION
To champion the interests of America’s credit unions serving our military and veteran communities. |
OUR HISTORY
The Defense Credit Union Council came into existence through the selflessness and compassion of individuals who sought to provide consistent and reliable financial services to those dedicated to safeguarding our lives. Defense credit unions, serving a highly mobile membership, face unique and distinctive challenges that set them apart from traditional credit unions.
|
Over time, these challenges led to the realization that defense credit unions required a representative or central organization to advocate for them within the Department of Defense (DoD) and facilitate the exchange of vital information. The DoD and its military departments showed a growing interest in credit unions, underscoring the urgent need for proper representation and liaison.
Unlike traditional credit unions, defense credit unions lacked a unified organization that could effectively represent them in their dealings with the DoD, similar to the role played by Credit Union National Association (CUNA) for all credit unions in their relationships with state and federal regulatory agencies. In response to this gap, member credit unions took action and established the Defense Credit Union Council on February 8, 1963, as a means to address this critical situation. Now in our 60th year, DCUC has evolved from its origins as a CUNA Council to emerge as a prominent trade association. Our mission has remained the same, to champion the interests of America’s credit unions serving our military and veteran communities! |
