Your weekly advocacy update: Stay informed, take action, and champion the voice of America’s defense credit unions! As we close out another active week of advocacy, I wanted to share several important developments and highlight how DCUC continues to champion the interests of defense and military-serving credit unions. Most recently, DCUC responded to FinCEN's Joint Advisory on Non-Work Authorized Populations and Their Employers and Risks to the Integrity of the U.S. Financial System. We welcomed the efforts to provide financial institutions with practical tools and guidance to identify suspicious activity and combat fraud, while reinforcing the need for a risk-based approach that recognizes the unique challenges facing smaller credit unions and avoids unnecessary regulatory burden. Earlier this week, DCUC submitted a letter for the record ahead of the House Financial Services Committee's hearing on the oversight of prudential regulators. In our comments, we urged lawmakers to focus on issues that directly impact military-serving credit unions, including liquidity support, regulatory burden, innovation, and the growing concern surrounding state interchange fee mandates. We also encouraged policymakers to seek clarity from the NCUA regarding federal preemption and the agency's plans to address similar state-level proposals moving forward. We were pleased to welcome Colorado Governor Jared Polis' veto of SB26-134, which we believe reflects a clear understanding of the complexity of the payments system and helps prevent unintended consequences for the communities you serve. Additionally, DCUC joined a coalition of associations in an official filing to the FCC and separately provided feedback to FinCEN on its proposed whistleblower program. While supporting the agency's efforts to strengthen anti-money laundering and national security protections, we recommended safeguards that encourage internal reporting, protect confidential supervisory information, maintain rigorous standards for whistleblower claims, and recognize credit unions' good-faith compliance efforts. Across each of these issues, our message remains consistent: credit unions play a vital role in protecting the financial system while serving military communities, and regulatory policies should support that mission through balanced, practical, and effective oversight.
