WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) wrote to the House Veterans Affairs Committee in advance of the hearing titled “Bureaucratic Barriers: Making VBA Education Services Work for Veterans and Not the Bureaucracy.” In the letter, DCUC noted how defense credit unions have supported veterans with services like financial education, VA home loan assistance, and GI Bill benefits management. However, several obstacles, including delays in direct deposit processing, slow VA home loan appraisals, lack of coordination between the VA and credit unions, and delayed GI Bill housing stipends, continue to hinder effective service delivery.
DCUC recommended solutions to include mandating VA and credit union collaboration to improve benefit delivery; streamline the VA Home Loan processing, reducing delays and improving appraisal processes; improving timeliness of GI Bill payments to ensure timely housing stipend payments to prevent financial instability; and modernize VA direct deposit systems to enhance payment processing speed and accuracy. DCUC calls for enhanced VA collaboration and process modernization to ensure veterans receive their benefits promptly and effectively, and remains committed to working with Congress and the VA to improve outcomes for veterans.
