DCUC Supports Congressional Efforts to Safeguard Deployed Servicemembers’ Educational Standing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) has urged Congress to ensure servicemembers are not penalized academically, professionally, or civically when military orders require them to deploy or otherwise step away from school-related responsibilities.

In a letter to the House Committee on Education & the Workforce ahead of today’s hearing, “Deployed, Not Disqualified: Defending Servicemembers in Our Schools,” DCUC emphasized that deployment should never jeopardize a servicemember’s educational standing, academic progress, community responsibilities, or opportunity to serve a local school. 
 
“The title of this hearing captures a principle that should unite every Member of Congress: Deployment must never become disqualification. Servicemembers do not control when they are activated, where they are sent, how long they are gone, or whether operational conditions permit reliable communication with those at home. An absence caused by military orders is not an abandonment of responsibility. No service member should lose educational standing, academic progress, community responsibilities, or the opportunity to serve a local school because that individual answered our nation’s call,” wrote Jason Stverak, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer. 
 
DCUC highlighted the direct connection between education, military advancement, and financial readiness. For credit unions serving military communities, these challenges are not abstract. DCUC explained that credit unions see firsthand how career advancement, higher earnings, education, and sound financial planning contribute to the readiness and quality of life of service members, veterans, and their families.
