DCUC Applauds HFSC Ranking Member Waters’ Call for Conference Committee

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) sent a prompt letter to Maxine Waters, Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, applauding her leadership in calling for a formal conference committee to reconcile House and Senate housing packages. ​

“Your push to move the Housing for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 6644) into conference is both timely and necessary. As you have consistently emphasized, meaningful housing reform will require bicameral coordination and bipartisan consensus to deliver real results for American families,” wrote Jason Stverak, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer on behalf of DCUC. ​

Stverak noted that the conference process represents a critical opportunity not just to finalize housing policy, but to strengthen the financial infrastructure that makes homeownership possible. 

DCUC called for the inclusion of four bipartisan credit union priorities: Credit Union Board Modernization, Central Liquidity Facility reform, Loan Maturity reform, and Veterans Member Business Lending improvements, each aimed at expanding access to affordable housing and financial stability. 

“DCUC commends Ranking Member Waters for her continued leadership in advancing a conference committee to reconcile housing legislation,” said DCUC President/CEO Anthony Hernandez, Ret. U.S. Air Force Colonel. “This is a critical moment to ensure that bipartisan, commonsense credit union reforms are included in the final package. We see this a promising opportunity to strengthen access to mortgage credit, supporting military and underserved communities, and expanding sustainable pathways to homeownership.” 

DCUC voiced that the nation’s credit union system remains on the front lines of serving servicemembers, veterans, and working families, and DCUC remains committed to working with Congress to secure meaningful outcomes through the conference process.
