CEO Update: The Power of Momentum in Driving Success

3/17/2025

Picture
Forward momentum is a key part of success in any organization. However, building momentum is a vastly different challenge from strategic planning, vision-setting, or even organizational growth. It is about taking small, consistent actions that lead to a series of small wins. Over time, these wins accumulate, gain recognition, and voila—momentum is achieved.
It sounds easy. In reality, momentum is one of the hardest things to create when transforming and growing an organization. It takes tremendous effort to convince people that change is necessary, redirect resources, reimagine structures, and simultaneously deliver value to stakeholders.

DCUC is moving forward—and using the very definition of momentum, here’s how:

Momentum = Mass × Velocity
First, momentum is a vector quantity, which means momentum has both direction and magnitude. Direction is critical since momentum pointed in the wrong direction can spell disaster. When momentum is pointed in the right direction—there is continued growth, positive results, and great success. DCUC’s strategic plan provides this direction.

Second, mass is a great multiplier. DCUC is growing! As new member credit unions join our organization, we increase our mass. We are also signing larger sponsorship deals which also increase our mass. Finally, as we build our PAC and National Advocacy Fund (more mass), we increase our capacity to do more for our members and the overall industry.

Finally, velocity amplifies our impact. In other words, as more people join or partner with DCUC, our speed increases, further accelerating our momentum. In today’s competitive market, speed is essential to growth. As the saying goes, “Fortune favors the bold.”

Never Standing Still
The key to sustained momentum? Never standing still.

Many organizations are content to coast on past successes, hoping the momentum they built years ago will carry them into the future. They hesitate to expend more energy, preferring stability over progress. Not DCUC.

We are not here to “hold our position” or “consolidate our gains.” We are not waiting for industry trade associations to give their approval. That would be a mistake. While others underestimated our potential, DCUC focused on continuous improvement, took calculated risks, and quietly built more capacity. Now, the secret is out. DCUC is disrupting industry delivery models and offering a better value for your dues dollars. Simply put—you won’t find a better deal anywhere in the industry. But we are not stopping here. By now, it should be clear where DCUC is headed. We are not the same organization we were 10 years ago, or even this time last year. And a year from now, we will be even better. I hope that it excites you and that you will continue the journey with us and encourage others to join.

The Most Important Factor
The final and most important factor behind all this is each of you, our member credit unions. We simply cannot accomplish our momentum and mission without your support. I guarantee DCUC will always strive to reward your trust and support.

To track our progress, I encourage you to continue reading the daily trade press, our weekly updates, and this monthly ALERT magazine. And—I look forward to seeing you at upcoming DCUC events, including our Annual Conference kicking off on July 28th!

As always, if you need to discuss anything with us, you know how to reach me directly. Thanks again for all you do in Serving Those Who Serve Our County!
