Suitland, Maryland (July 8, 2019): The cost of a college education is skyrocketing. The average price for a four-year institution comes out to $26,120 per year, according to Forbes. Students are also responsible for housing, food, and books, which can run thousands of dollars per year. These massive expenses are exactly why Andrews Federal Credit Union offers an annual scholarship program. Every year, in the early spring, ten young students have the opportunity to earn a $2,000 scholarship to help cover the cost of their education.

Scholarship winners were announced at the Andrews Federal Annual Meeting held on Monday evening, June 24. Rain clouds hung overhead and drizzled as scholarship winners anxiously arrived at the Andrews Federal headquarters building. Frank Cardile, Chairman of the Board of Directors, made jokes and lightened the mood as he presented Alexa Mitka, Aysia Conner, and Jenna Schniegenberg with their $2,000 checks. All of the winners and their chosen Universities are listed below:

  • Alexa Mitka, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Aysia Conner, Ohio State University
  • Jenna Schniegenberg, University of Cincinnati
  • Kayleigh Rodriguez, Virginia Tech
  • Lillian Gyamfi, Rutgers New Brunswick
  • Maya Patel, North Carolina University
  • Olivia Hansen, Madison University
  • Rachael Baker, Oakland University
  • Romona Harden, Salisbury University

“It’s a wonderful feeling to see Team Andrews contributing to the future of the next generation,” said Jim Hayes, President/CEO, Andrews Federal. “These young adults are smart, humble, and talented. Without a doubt, they will achieve greatness in their future endeavors.”
