BREMERTON, Wash. – The Kitsap Credit Union (KCU) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Shawn Gilfedder will join the organization as its new President & CEO, effective October 1, 2018. Shawn comes to KCU after more than a decade of service as President & CEO of McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union (MHFCU), headquartered in East Windsor, New Jersey.

Elliot Gregg will continue as President Emeritus and retire after almost two decades spent at the helm of the $1.2 billion credit union on January 15, 2019.

With a passion for member-focused service, financial wellness, and community involvement, Shawn is a nationally recognized leader in the credit union community. He brings extensive experience with financial institutions, including capital markets, commercial banking, and the ability to incorporate digital channels to enhance the member experience. In addition, Shawn hopes his forward-looking perspective on financial health initiatives will be a tremendous benefit to the communities that KCU serves.

During his time as President & CEO of MHFCU, he led the $420 million not-for-profit organization through innovative campaigns that expanded its membership over 100% and increased assets by 150%, while shaping a vision and mission to improve the financial wellness of its membership.

Throughout his career, Shawn has established various financial literacy, education, and scholarship initiatives within his communities. He promoted financial education through his launch of the VOICE Foundation for MHFCU’s charitable activities, which raised over $700K since inception through various community events. Most notably, Shawn was recognized as Corporate Citizen of the Year from the National Junior Tennis and Learning Program of the United States Tennis Association for his fundraising efforts to revitalize Cadwalder Park’s courts and after school educational programming in Trenton, NJ.

Additionally, Shawn has embraced his role as a champion of financial wellness on both a local and national level. Regularly featured in the New York Daily News, U.S. News and World Report, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on ABC News’ Good Morning America, he has touted the benefits of financial education and wellness for consumers.
Committed to the cooperative mission of credit unions, Shawn is currently a Board Director for America’s Credit Union Museum, whose purpose is to embrace the history of the credit union industry.

During Shawn’s credit union career, he has volunteered and served in several capacities. He was a task force member of CUNA’s Government-Sponsored Enterprise housing reform initiatives. Dedicating himself as a member of the NJ Credit Union League Board, Shawn has had progressive key roles in governance, bylaw-restructuring initiatives, and ultimately served as Board Chair.

Susan Baker, Vice Chair of the KCU Board of Directors shared, “Shawn’s visionary and creative approach to leading is a perfect match for our credit union. Throughout the interview process, we were impressed with his integrity, genuine belief in the cooperative movement, and focus on member and community financial wellness.”

Susan added, “His leadership philosophy is forward thinking and focuses on ‘peeking around the corner’ to always stay ahead of the curve. We are confident that Shawn will propel the credit union to new heights while honoring its rich history.”

KCU engaged DDJ Myers, a nationally recognized recruiting firm, to conduct the nationwide search for selecting the new President & CEO.

Shawn will relocate with his wife Alison, two children, and their golden retriever from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest. He plans to hit the ground running, making it his mission to meet each of KCU’s almost 300 employees across the Western Washington region within his first few days.

“Being a part of a community is an essential element of one’s successful journey in life. Kitsap Credit Union helps define community by bringing people together in a meaningful way to improve their financial health and wellness. I am proud to be selected as KCU’s next CEO and build upon this trusted foundation,” Shawn said.

Shawn achieved his MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University in Global Business Management and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance from William Paterson University.
