PenFed Summer Internship Program Promotes Credit Union Values

The 2017 PenFed summer internship program hosted 37 undergraduate and MBA students from 17 different top colleges and universities across America. From over 1000+ applicants, we selected the best and brightest students to engage in a summer of learning and career development at PenFed. The students were assigned to a variety of PenFed departmental projects based on their majors and fields of interest. The departments ranged from finance to data analytics to cyber security. The interns also worked on a group project that they presented to our senior leaders at the end of the internship. It was a unique opportunity for them to work with fellow interns from schools across America. In addition, the interns met with our Executive team members weekly in a lunch and learn session to discover the inner workings of a credit union.

In the credit union spirit of supporting our communities, our interns volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Community Living Center in Washington, D.C. They had a chance to spend quality time with our nation’s Veterans and mixed in some fun too playing bingo and Wii bowling with the Veterans. The interns also washed all the VA Medical Center volunteer vehicles, cleaned and planted flowers on the patio and served fruit to the Veterans after lunch.

It wasn’t all business during the internship program. We treated the interns to a night of bowling and to a day at Top Golf. The interns also challenged our senior leaders in a game of Ultimate Frisbee.

As the senior manager of the internship program and Veteran myself, my goal for the program was to expose our next generation of leaders to an organization that is not only financially stable and a destination employer, but also an organization that values our military community and their importance to our nation.
