LEAVENWORTH, Kan., June 19, 2017 – Frontier Community Credit Union donated $10,610 to the Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope to help pay for construction of the organization’s new homeless shelter.

The credit union launched its Home For The Homeless program in 2016 to raise funds for the new shelter. A $100 donation was given for every mortgage loan made to credit union members. Individual donations were also accepted.

“The demand for a safe place to stay at night in the Leavenworth area doubled from January 2015 to January 2016, and the numbers are even greater this year,” says Michael Augustine, credit union president. “There is a tremendous need for a new shelter, and we are proud to play a role in getting this project completed.”

The building will be located at the intersection of 3rd and Kiowa streets and will include the shelter, a day center and offices for Welcome Central, an outreach program that connects people in need with local agencies to get help. The shelter is staffed by volunteers.

“We are getting close to reaching our goal of $600,000 for our new facility,” says coordinator Sister Vickie Perkins, who opened the first shelter in 2014. “We deeply appreciate the support we have received from Frontier Community Credit Union in helping us reach our goal.”
