The DCUC Conference will be held in San Francisco at the Fairmont Hotel from Aug. 16-18, 2009
The world-famous Fairmont Hotel has a long fascinating history. Just days before the hotel was scheduled to open, the Great Earthquake rocked San Francisco on April 18, 1906. While buildings through out the city crumbled, the Fairmont's strong Corinthian marble columns braced the hotel from collapse. The Hotel was chosen as the command post for the Mayor and city officials, who sat on crates in the lobby and plotted strategies to halt the inferno engulfing the city. Although the Fairmont's exterior was left unscathed, the fire eventually did ravage its interior.
Exactly one year after the Great Earthquake, the Fairmont was the first hotel in the city to reopen-a momentous occasion making San Francisco's great stride toward rebirth and rejuvenation. Since then, the Fairmont has maintained its eminence atop Nob Hill and the top of San Francisco's thriving cultural life.
